Rowing

Rowing

Rowing offers programs in both sweep rowing (single oar) and sculling (two oars) that caters to the beginner and recreational rower and also to those wishing to participate at the competitive level.  Rowing is a Fit-for-Life sport, and is open to people from aged 12 and up.

There are various programs at MicMac, including:

Junior: Our Junior program is designed for youth under the age of 19.   Youth will have the opportunity to learn the basics of rowing in crew boats, and can progress according to their interest and individual skill development.

For the summer of 2011, our Juniors program runs from July 3 until August 26, Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 till noon.   Youth will spend time with certified coaches both on the water and “dry-land” training using ergometres, running and other activities.   There is a strong emphasis on safety, sportsmanship and developing healthy life skills.

The cost for the summer Juniors program is $250., which includes a membership to MicMac AAC and Rowing Canada Aviron insurance and membership.    All equipment is provided, and youth should bring clothing suitable for being on the water (shorts/t-shirt/socks) and dry-land training (running shoes).   They should also bring a change of clothes in case of inclement weather, snacks & water.

Juniors have the opportunity to race (novice level) at local regattas, including the Bud Myra Memorial Regatta (the Nova Scotia Sprints) on July 16 and 17,  and the MicMac Around the Lakes Regatta in late August.

Along with rowing, youth may participate in group hikes (local area), picnics and swimming.

Learn-to-Row: Learn-to-Row classes are offered for people who are new to the sport, or past rowers who want to brush up on their basic skills.   They are taught by certified Learn-to-Row instructors, and cover a wide array of information including safety procedures, overview of club and equipment, boat-handling and practical on-the-water practices.

A Learn-to-Row session typically encompasses 6 classes held three evenings per week over a two-week period.   Having the classes close together allows people to learn the basics quickly, and progress to rowing recreationally.

Learn-to-Row costs $109. and includes RCA insurance.   People who join a recreational program after taking the LTR have a credit of $109. applied to their membership fee.

All equipment is provided, and participants should dress in light layers in clothing suitable for being on the water (shorts/t-shirt/socks).   They should also bring a change of clothes in case of inclement weather & water.

Recreational: Our recreation program is open to rowers over the age of 19.   Everyone must as a minimum have completed Learn-to-Row classes.   Recreation members can row in crew boats or single shells depending on their interest and skill level.   There is an emphasis on safety and personal enjoyment, while providing the opportunity to further develop skills.

A recreational membership from June 1 – August 30 is $299., and includes MMAAC membership as well as Rowing Canada Aviron insurance.   All equipment is provided.

Competitive: MicMac Rowing Club offers one of the best competitive training programs in Eastern Canada.  Athletes must demonstrate a commitment to performance, be highly self-motivated and be able to commit to the demanding schedule of training and competing.    Individuals interested in joining the competitive program at MicMac Rowing should contact Coach Pat Cody to discuss their interest and skill level.

A competitive membership is $450.   Athletes are responsible to fund their attendance at regattas and a club racing uniform.
